Spine width = page count × paper thickness. White paper and standard color: 0.002252 in per page; cream: 0.0025 in; groundwood: 0.00235 in; premium color: 0.002347 in. A 100-page book on white paper has a 0.225 in spine; 300 pages, 0.676 in.
Cover width = bleed + back cover + spine + front cover + bleed. Bleed is 0.125 in on each side. Cover height = trim height + 0.25 in. A 6 × 9 book with 200 pages on white paper: 12.700 × 9.250 in, or 3,810 × 2,775 px at 300 DPI.
Spine text needs at least 79 pages (80 in Cover Creator). Keep it 0.0625 in from each spine edge, and keep front and back text 0.125 in inside the trim lines.
Change the page count or paper, and the cover has to be redone: the spine width changes with them. File formats, the designer brief we use and what a cover costs: KDP book cover size and requirements. Royalty per copy and break-even ACOS: KDP royalty calculator.
Multiply the page count by the thickness of your paper: 0.002252 in per page for white paper and standard color, 0.0025 in for cream, 0.00235 in for groundwood and 0.002347 in for premium color. Example: 150 pages on cream paper = 0.375 in.
Width: twice the trim width, plus the spine, plus 0.25 in of bleed (0.125 in on each side). Height: trim height plus 0.25 in. For 8.5 × 11 with 100 pages on white paper: 17.475 × 11.25 in.
At least 300 DPI. Multiply the cover size in inches by 300 to get pixels: a 12.7 × 9.25 in cover is 3,810 × 2,775 px. The print cover goes up as one PDF; the Kindle eBook cover is a separate JPEG or TIFF, ideally 2,560 × 1,600 px.
Only if the book has 79 pages or more (80 in Cover Creator), with at least 0.0625 in of space on either side of the text.
No. A hardcover case wraps around the boards and needs extra margin, so its cover is larger than a paperback's. For hardcover, use the cover template KDP generates for your book.
It depends on the store, ink, trim size and page count. On Amazon.com a black-and-white 6 × 9 paperback costs $2.30 up to 108 pages, then $1.00 plus $0.012 per page. The calculator shows the cost for every store that prints paperbacks and the lowest list price KDP accepts: printing cost divided by the royalty rate.
